Overview
On July 22, 2011, the second biennial "Brain Injury Report Out Day" was held at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen hosted by the Department of Rehabilitative Services and the Virginia Brain Injury Council. This meeting also served as a grant activity of the TBI Act Federal Grant #6H21MCO6763-05-002 awarded to the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. The purpose of this event was to provide state agencies an opportunity to report on the services they provide to Virginians with brain injury and to share their successes and challenges. There was also a focus this year on veterans' issues, with a keynote address by Dr. Harold Kudler, who presented on the special issues faced by Guard and Reserve members and their families.
Eighty-four people attended this meeting representing nine state agencies, brain injury service providers (state funded and privately funded), the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program Staff, Councils and Boards under the Department of Rehabilitative Services and Virginia Brain Injury Council members. Seven of the nine agencies participated in a roundtable discussion on "What the Commonwealth is Doing and Where We are Going". Attendees were honored to have Deputy Secretary Keith Hare participate in the presentation of awards. Senator Ralph Northam received the "Champion Award", from the Virginia Brain Injury Council, in appreciation of his commitment and dedication to championing the needs of Virginians with brain injuries and their families, and Senator Toddy Pulley received the "Toggle Award", from the Department of Rehabilitative Services, for her dedication and leadership in establishing services in the Commonwealth for veterans with brain injury.
