Substance Abuse Services (SAS)

Background:

Since 1988, the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse (DMHMRSAS) and the Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) have operated the interagency Contract Substance Abuse Vocational Rehabilitation (Contract SAS) Program involving co-located clinical and employment-oriented programs within Community Services Boards in Portsmouth, Region Ten, and Northwestern. This collaborative effort was designed to address job entry and maintenance problems experienced by people with alcohol and other drug dependency problems. The Contract SAS Program provides employment and community stability through focus on vocational development, work habits, job readiness, and employment follow-along services along with collaborative Community Services Board (CSB) clinical and social supports. Recent increased collaboration between DMHMRSAS and DRS made expansion of the Contract SAS Program possible to sixteen additional CSB's. The CSB Board locations are as follows: Valley, New River Valley, Central, Blue Ridge, Rappahannock, Fairfax-Falls Church, Prince William, Alexandria, Henrico, New Kent and Charles City, Danville-Pittsylvania, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesterfield, District 19, and Hampton/Newport News.

Consumer Definition:

The SAS projects provide vocational rehabilitation services to consumers who have primary diagnoses of alcohol or drug abuse disabilities and are actively involved in CSB treatment or have completed treatment.
